Lyrics

Leaving Home (by Elena) A song for those in Venezuela and around the world facing this predicament

Leaving home, leaving home
Leaving all they’ve ever known
Fleeing fear and desperation
Leaving home

It was a land enchanted by the Caribbean Sea
From the snow capped Andes mountains to the plains of Anzoátegui
It had the whole world in its hands
A vast and fertile paradise
No wonder it was named (in 1498) the “Land of Grace”

Fast forward to the era of the strongman and caudillo
Whose power grip and iron fist in time gave way to freedom
But now the people stand in line
And stare at empty shelves they find
Hunger spreads and battles seethe
And young folk die on fiery streets
And grace has turned to grief

And now they’re:
Leaving home, leaving home
Leaving all they’ve ever known
Ten thousand steps, a river’s journey, or by sea
Leaving home, leaving home,
Leaving all they’ve ever known
Fleeing fear and desperation
Leaving for another nation
Leaving Home

Now, the same thing could be said of countless nations old and young
Believing that their leaders their promises will keep
But power breeds corruption and corruption follows greed
For you see, my friends, the more things change
The more they stay the same

Leaving home, leaving home.....
